Exam fairness

چکیده
It is widely agreed that exams must be fair; yet what this exactly means is not made clear. One may mean fairness of treatment, but this merely propagates the fairness or unfairness of pre-existing rules. Fairness of opportunity on the other hand necessarily leads to identical grades for everyone, which clearly makes it inapplicable. Neither view is helpful to make decisions on competing claims: fairness of treatment ignores the problem and fairness of opportunity holds all claims to be equally valid. To escape this deadlock one needs an external criterion, such as how good engineers students will be, to replace fairness viewed as student–student comparison. c © Mathieu Bouville, 2008

Ex - ante Fairness in the Boston Mechanism under Pre - exam Preference Submission
1 In an exam-based school choice matching mechanism (e.g., China’s college admission), student exam scores are used to determine school priorities. However, a student’s true qualifications or ability may not be perfectly revealed by his/her exam score. The matching outcome can thus be undesirable in the sense that it is not ex-ante fair, i.e., it may not match students with higher intrinsic abi...
متن کاملA New Exam Scheduling Algorithm Using Graph Coloring
This paper presents a graph-coloring-based algorithm for the exam scheduling application, with the objective of achieving fairness, accuracy, and optimal exam time period. Through the work, we consider few assumptions and constraints, closely related to the general exam scheduling problem, and mainly driven from accumulated experience at various universities. The performance of the algorithm is...
متن کاملEx-ante fairness in the Boston and serial dictatorship mechanisms under pre-exam and post-exam preference submission
In a school choice mechanism, school priorities are often based on student exam scores, by which student true ability may not be perfectly revealed. An ex-post fair matching mechanism (for example, Serial Dictatorship) can be undesirable in that it is not ex-ante fair: it may not match students with higher abilities to better schools, although it always matches students with higher scores to be...
متن کاملParticipatory Examinations in Asynchronous Learning Networks: Longitudinal Evaluation Results
This paper presents longitudinal evaluation results for an online participatory examination process in an information systems course over three semesters. The exam process includes students making up questions, answering other students’ questions, grading answers to questions they author, and appealing the grades. The surveys following each exam elicited students’ feedback, and an experiment co...

The generalizability aspect of Construct validity, as proposed by Messick (1989), requires that a test measures the same trait across different samples from the same population. Differential Item functioning (DIF) analysis is a key component in the fairness evaluation of educational tests. University entrance exam for the candidates who seek admission into master's English programs (MEUEE) at I...
